Fire officials in Carrboro responded yesterday morning to reports of a bad chemical smell—and wound up having to contain what turned out to be an oil spill from a 275-gallon underground tank. Joining us from the scene, with a live report on the cleanup effort, is our very own Kit FitzSimons.
Yes, it’s National Banned Books Week, a week that’s devoted to celebrating intellectual freedom and fighting censorship whenever and wherever it strikes. And to mark this very important occasion, we here at DSI Witness News would simply like to read from a novel: the new, locally-inspired James Bond novel by Chapel Hill’s own Jeffrey Deaver. And so, to commemorate Banned Books Week—and BOND Books Week too—here is the final, climactic chapter.
As you may know, last weekend, the DSI Comedy Theater in Carrboro held its annual YLAUGH Festival to benefit the local YMCA. As always, the highlight of the festival was 24LIVE, an improv comedy marathon featuring seven performers who were on stage nonstop for twenty-four hours straight—including our very own Kit FitzSimons.
If you’ve been tuning in at all today to 1360 WCHL you are well aware that TODAY is National Love Note Day. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, September 24th is National Love Note Day, a day encouraging all men and women, old and young, to write, or proclaim on the radio, a love note to that someone or something that you love. And we here at DSI Witness News knew that this was the perfect opportunity for one of your favorites to profess and further proclaim HER love for that special someone. Without further ado, DSI Witness News would like to welcome, Carrboro Citizen Par Excellence Extraordinaire, Ms. Aurora Joplin.
Zach Ward comes in to the studio to talk about Y LAUGH.
DSI Comedy Theater proudly hosts the 9th Annual Y LAUGH Comedy Fundraiser for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA. Featuring the Dual Duel (Our Annual Comedy Duo Challenge), Critically Acclaimed improv from PT Scarborough and the return of 24LIVE! our 24-Hour Comedy Marathon.
Y programs teach young people important values such as caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Through a variety of fun and rewarding activities, they develop valuable skills while they gain confidence and self-esteem. You simply cannot put a price on enriching the character of a child.
We are honored to have DSI Comedy Theater partner with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA. DSI is not only dedicated to making people laugh, but Zach Ward and his creative group believe in contributing to the overall good of our community. — Drew Smith, YMCA Development Director
Without the help of organizations like DSI, we would be leaving kids out of vital experiences like after school care and summer camps, programs that keep them safe and shape their futures. — Greg Lee, YMCA Membership Director

The UNC football team is still looking for its first win after Saturday’s narrow loss to Georgia Tech, and questions continue to swirl around the ongoing investigations of player misconduct. Now, with all the negativity surrounding the investigations, we certainly don’t want to add fuel to the fire by poking fun. So instead, please enjoy three minutes of Gino Fontanelli singing That’s Amore.
Coach Davis donates a billion dollars, anarchist bookfair, ample self-righteousness, sustainability series, kids make the grade, opening a window > weatherbug, and concise writing.
Next month, a delegation from Orange County will travel to Charlotte as part of the International Energy Code Council, the organization responsible for setting energy efficiency standards for the entire country. Joining us today to say more about the upcoming trip, is one of Orange County’s most vocal environmental cheerleaders. Here he is, once again: UNC’s official eco-friendly mascot, Woody Biomass!
